Final Event Battle of Talents

Yesterday, the Final Event of Battle of Talents took place at Kanselarij Brussels, a beautiful auditorium of BNP Paribas Fortis. Six teams battled for the end prizes of this edition: a trip to New York, electronic devices and office equipment, and consulting by Bryo and Addestino. In total worth € 22 500.

Our five finalists (EatSafe, PowerSpot, Nestling, Five to Noon and Gh2OAT) were accompagnied by our wild-card team of Tribes.City. Each of them got 3’ time to pitch their idea to convince Jury and audience of their product, service or solution. The presentations were followed by a 5’ Q&A with the Jury. Also the audience could participate in this Q&A by using the Twitterwall.

In the course of the evening we also invited two ex-Battle of Talents finalists. Our last year winner Academic Labs and finalist disj.be. They both elaborated their idea further into reality after last year’s edition. Academic Labs followed the Telenet Kickstart traject and Disj.be has been further incorporated within Colruyt. Their entrepreneurial spirit got a real boost by participating to Battle of Talents. They received instant feedback and were able to expand their network. Two key aspects to bring their idea into a real ‘venture’!

During the Jury deliberation, Mr. Philippe Muyters – Minister of Economy, Innovation, Work and Sports – gave an inspiring keynote: “I have a dream!”. Young entrepreneurs are important to foster innovation in our region, work together with different parties, and to make the world a better place. So, a real warm call to follow all of our entrepreneurial dreams!

Eventually, the Jury reached a common decision on the winners after 20 minutes of deliberation. Third place was granted to UGent team Nestling. Nestling is an online & offline community of parents to take care of childcare together. The second place was awarded to UGent team GH2OAT. They presented a real social project to help people in Burkina Faso with backpacks for ghoats to carry water over long distances. Finally, the heart beats of our remaining finalist teams reached higher levels. Who will become our winner? That honor was awarded to the – also from UGent – Five to Noon team. They created an ecological solution to transport and store food bought in package-free supermarkets. The “green spirit” of these 4 boys really attracted the Jury! At the end, a special prize – the Engie energy prize – was awarded to PowerSpot. They created a power socket attached under the table to charge any electrical device instantly without cable connections. They went home with a back-pack with sonar panels and a personal tablet.

Battle of Talents was this year again a great success. More than 1000 participants and over 130 ideas were launched on our interactive online business game. Thanks for all your feedback, investments and energy! Battle of Talents, edition VIII, will start in September. See you soon!
